who am i crushing on this week!

Name: Christoph Waltz
Occupation: Actor, Dreamboat
Status: Divorced (woo!) with three adult children (boo.); also has a young daughter with his “longtime companion” (double boo.), but they live in Berlin and he lives in London (woo?)
Most known for: hunting Jews as Col. Hans Landa in Quentin Tarantino’s Inglourious Basterds
First known for: he’s got ninety-one acting gigs listed on his IMDB, basically all German, so those
Up next: he’s currently filming The Green Hornet with Seth Rogen and Cameron Diaz and, of course, playing the bad guy: Chudnofsky
Why you crushin’?: I mean, it’s tough to crush on a guy when he’s in a Nazi uniform, so this crush was sort of put on hold. When I was in Los Angeles last week, though, and happened upon “arrivals” of the Hamilton Behind the Camera Awards (I will post about that trip, I swear I will!), he was there – in all his bearded glory, prancing beside a former Crush, mere feet from where I stood. It was swoons at first sight.

Utterly enrapturing.

I think there are so many things that I want to vent about that I'm not sure where to start. Ha. WonderFUL.
Well at least today was nice, and yesterday...because I got to see my oldest friend. Beth was in town to pick out bridesmaid dresses with Megan so I got to see Brody. Man that kid is so freaking cute and awesome. If I wanted one I'd steal him. It was so good seeing her and meeting him. She is doing such a good job with him, a really awesome mom.
Other than seeing her this weekend the rest of my last couple of months has been poopie. My last semester is getting to be a little stressful. And by a little I mean I have a headache like all the time now. For one its thinking about the final paper due for my last AMST class and for two work is making my head throb anytime I walk through the front door.
If we're not 6 pallets behind, numerous employees down or tedious silly tasks left to do then it wouldn't seem like a normal day at work. I hope I'll be able to find something soon after I graduate, if I graduate. I hope I do ok and am able to finish school. I'm so afraid of failing. oy.
I get really freaked out when I think about having to send out graduation announcements. Then it's like ok so I'm going to graduate, but what if when I get my grades back I didn't pass? Stupid system.
work work work school school school. I think I'll be a little happier when I just have to focus on one. I look forward to being a new person when January rolls around. Wish me luck, and sanity.

I’ve always felt it would be a nice career to have, reviewing movies and television shows for online and paper magazines. I almost never agree with the ones I read, and since I see so many films a year and watch so much television each season, you’d think it would be an easy thing to do, for me. But I’m just really terrible at it! I can barely give someone a nice, coherent roundup of a film I’d just seen. I’ve always been terrible at summarizing, and anything I say is usually just followed with a “You had to be there. You have to see it.”
This will, most likely, be no different. Last night, I had a double feature of A Serious Man and An Education. Two important-sounding titles, two acclaimed movies, one seriously terrible-at-talking-about-movies girl. But I’ll try!

Of the dozens of movies I’ve seen this year (for once, I am not overexaggerating with sarcasm here), A Serious Man might very well be my absolute favorite. I’m not sure what has me so connected – I’m not Jewish, I’m not a man, I didn’t grow up in the 1960s – but I can’t stop thinking about it. The first scene, though people in the theatre chuckled, (intentionally so) wasn’t very funny. It turned goofy toward the very end, but with serious undertones that had me wondering whether I was in the wrong theatre. The rest of the film was completely painful, real, and, of course, hilarious. Michael Stuhlbarg, in his breakout role (though he’s done the Law & Order rounds), was absolutely amazing as Larry Gopnik. I can’t imagine anyone else playing this role as hurt and confused and perfect as he’d done.
For this who’ve seen it or will, we are or will be divided by the ending. There’s no middle ground about it: you’ll love it, or despise it. I loved it. I won’t spoil, but I will say that Joel and Ethan Coen have done this type of ending in the recent past and caught the same “y/n” response this is getting. I feel like there could be no better ending than the one this received. It’s real life. Things don’t tie up nicely in bows afterward, you know?

An Education on the other hand, wasn’t terrible. I’m not using snark, but I didn’t think it was as brilliant as it’s being sold to be. The story starts rather abruptly, and the end scenes don’t fully match the rest of what was being told. I know the events were based on real life (particularly, the memoir written by Lynn Barber with the same title; though, it doesn’t seem too strictly based on those facts), but they seemed a little slapped together to appease mass audiences in the end. Carey Mulligan (also known as Shia LaBeouf’s girlfriend) did an amazing job playing the wide-eyed, booksmart/naive-in-life Jenny, and Peter Sarsgaard was equally great being, well, a total creeper.
I’d gone into the film thinking she’d be seduced by his charms. She was, but there were definite red flags throughout their courtship – and the most awkward scene with a banana (that only lasted, what, thirty seconds? But still!) – that really made the whole thing feel so real. Which, in turn, left me feeling odd, though I think that reaction is what made the middle chunk of the film so good. We’re not supposed to be “ok” with this relationship. At least, I don’t think we are. Another problem I had with this film? It has forced me to continue debating whether or not I find Dominic Cooper attractive. I’m really having a tough time deciding.

i forget about my LJ for months. when i get around to posting again, i realize just how much i miss it. a few friends of mine have started using twitter, but i think i am way to self-absorbed and long-winded to confine my entries to just a sentence or two (although my entries have gotten much shorter than they used to be).
i've been very homesick for ohio lately. crazy, i know. i think its because my mom is sick. it makes me realize just how far away i really am. i'm going home in january for a week. i just hope that makes me feel better. it's so strange that i moved to a cool fun little city, but i was way more social when i lived in youngstown.
i don't think i mentioned that we got a puppy! she is a black lab and i named her bacon. she is now 13 weeks old. she dressed as a banana for halloween (for about ten minutes before attacking the costume and attempting to rip it apart).
work has been good. most of my clients are strippers or old ladies, so that keeps things interesting.
i'm really into watching history channel documentaries that i get from netflix. currently i'm watching one about the dark ages. i just finished one about the salem witch trials. next its on the the philadelphia experiment.
my current food obsessions are smoked almonds and laffy taffy (not eaten together of course). but i'm not making a long term commitment to those foods.
i want a zebra print snuggie to further cement my status as a hermit who does nothing but watch tv. i may wear it to work at some point. just because i can.

| Daily Wear -- 11.13 |
[13 Nov 2009|09:08pm] |
Just like the last time I got a haircut, I've had the urge dress slighly more manly-ly. This pretty much just involves collared shirts and pants.

Except, no wait, I'm not wearing a collared shirt here. Anyways, I usually don't post on certain days of the week because on those certain days, I only have one morning class and... don't really feel like thinking of what to wear. *gasp* On those days, I'm pretty much wearing something simple like this.

I like the look of puffy/furry vests over up top of blazers (as Gap usually does so prodigiously with their runway styling). This one is a bit bulky though.
Norma Kamali for Walmart blazer, Gap vest, Evil Genius fishtail top, secondhand pants, secondhand Corsina shoes

A week ago I submitted my living room to Apartment Therapy for some sage advice. This weekend, we toiled and installed doors on the bookshelf to foil dog assaults upon the contents. Behold:

Still got to find a coffee table and proper rug solution. I did order FLOR, but prior to my post and it was for a hallway to try out. If it performs well I will order for the living room, but since there is much more space to account for there it was a sizable investment without trying it out first on something smaller.

who am i crushing on this week!

Name: Cory Allan (aw!) Monteith
Occupation: Actor, Pre-ejaculator
Status: (according to Wikipedia) “He is rumored to be dating his glee co-star, Lea Michele. He has not yet confirmed or denied their relationship but said they were very close friends.” A little bit of me just died.
Most known for: portraying Finn Hudson on this show called Glee?
First known for: well, he’s been a little role in a lot of things, but it looks like he had an arc on the now defunct Kyle XY. I never watched that show. Dudes with no belly buttons freak me out.
Up next: most of the Glee cast has been touring the country (world?) promoting the first season’s soundtrack, but Wikipedia also has him playing someone called “Belushi” in a movie called Breaking the Girl that will be out in 2010? IMDB disagrees, though.
Why you crushin’?: er, because I was two feet from him a few-ish days ago? Ok, so my friend Ashley and I were in Los Angeles for about a week. @frankenteen tweeted about the signing at the Grove. Unfortch, you had to get a wristband in order to get in line to have your copy of the soundtrack signed. Double unfortch, they gave out wristbands the day before we even arrived in the city. Fortch, you were still allowed inside the building. Double fortch, dude blocking the way let me take a picture (of them, from far away, through plastic-glass) really quick before other security guard saw. Triple fortch, the kids went on break while we waited around deciding what to do, so they walked by us. Twice! I guess I should’ve saved this exciting story for my Los Angeles recap post, as it has nothing to do why I’m crushing. He’s cute, he sings well, he seems nice, he’s funny. I don’t like that he doesn’t pronounce his last name correctly, but that’s just the German in me.

| Your Periodic Etsy Covet Roundup |
[10 Nov 2009|10:30pm] |
So I was just having a conversation about gift giving, which tangentially reminded me that it's been a while since I've expressed my insatiable lust for material goods. Even though I don't believe in the holiday season starting until Black Friday. However, I am also avoiding work.
As usual, Etsy is a swirling instigator of said lust. Mostly for some of the in-sane vintage shoe selections some sellers have out right now. Check out these animal-print beauties:

All from James Rowland Shop. Rather pricey, but. Incredible. The whole shop is extremely covetable; these are the kinds of sellers that make me wonder where they pick their goods up in the first place.

Left: Zebra fur print, pointed toe, winkle picker style from Time Echo Vintage. Pretty much everything I could ever want from a shoe. I'd possibly be getting out my credit card now if they were in my size. Damn every shoe-that-is-not-my-size. *shakes fist*
Right: Not always a fan of slip-ons, but these lacy doily ones from seller GoodEye are bizarrely appealing. I don't know, maybe because they remind me of these embellished Keds I saw a while ago in a Baltmore vintage store. There's something endearing about hand-made doilies and beading on shoes.
But let's move away from shoes for now. I think most of the blogosphere knows of Yokoo, though I've never brought up her knitting majesty.

Her hats and scarves remind me that it will, one day indeed, get cold around here, even though right now it's friggin' 70 degrees in November. Mmm, Sweetheart Chain... chain link knit scarves are still all the rage, at least in my mind.
And finally, I ganked this from Kingdom of Style -- as a graphic design major, I am emotionally obligated to be attracted to this helvetica necklace:

Oh, the design world's most blessed and cursed typeface. I don't know how I feel about the letters being so kerned together, however.

I'm seriously exhausted. I can't remember the last time I wasn't stressed out at work. I really miss being around ppl I can relate to (as strange as that is since there r a bunch of us at psd who do the same thing) but I feel like no one understands my cases or is on my level. Having friends who do the same job also isn't the same. I guess basically I need my classmates back. I need their positive reinforcements, their understanding, and their encouragement. I wish everybody wasn't so spread out now that we've all graduated. Ugh.
I am over qualified for my job. Plain n simple. And its really taking a toll on me.

| Daily Wear -- 11.08 & 11.09 |
[09 Nov 2009|09:43pm] |
Since I didn't post yesterday, you get two outfits jammed into one post!
Yesterday I went to a fashion photo exhibition opening called Immortal Style! Basically the space featured some works from local fashion photographers. Part of Foto Week DC, a week-long DC photo fest.
As usual, I had trouble coming up with what to wear, since party-type dress usually involves not-so-many layers.
Oh, and also, I got my hair cut. Right at the peak of people of the coming up to me and saying, "I saw someone in ______ place with the same hair as you!" period. I realize I'm getting rid of my "trademarked" rip-off style and now no one will recognize me anymore but, hey. I do what I wan'.

Pros of hairstyle: For the first time in years, I have my full range of vision returned to me, now that bangs aren't blocking the tops of my eyes. It was, funnily enough, discombobulating at first. Like, I got dizzy while driving.
Cons: Hair no longer disguises my huge, chronic, purple eye bags.
Hair does not, however, make my head look huge, as this picture suggests. I'm just leaning against a wall.

Met cool local artist BK Adams, asked to take a picture with him. Failed Blue Steel attempt part 2. Arggg eye bags.

Only pic where I don't look like a zombie.
There were a bunch of people there with great personal style. I did not get any good pictures, unfortunately.
Marc by Marc Jacobs gold sequin and purple dress, Zara sequin cardigan, H&M faux fur stole, We Love Colors sparkly fishnets, secondhand Hill and Dale shoes
And today:

Not terribly exciting, but I snapped it nonetheless.
Sorry for the harried tone of this post, now to get to work.

anybody else using meme.yahoo.com?
it's a bit of a mish-mash-mix-up-cross-between twitter.com & tumblr.com. i've signed up for two accounts. i'm not sure what i'll use either for as yet, let alone whether i'll bother to update either for a prolonged period. none too keen on the lack of links to the originating source of images, but you can manually add information if you're posting something yourself (rather than reposting from others' meme pages) i believe tumblr is likely better... but my personal tumblr account is just an automated rss feed from my flickr & it ceased to work a while ago, for no apparent reason. (dull) many usernames are still available at meme, it seems relatively new. perhaps set to plummet? anyway, link me to your accounts if you have any, and follow mine if you'd like to:
